Grand and seemingly untouched, Tanzania is an emblematic ecosystem. It’s home to a mosaic of the planet’s most mesmerising safari destinations and some of the world’s most breathtaking wildlife phenomena. 

Mount Kilimanjaro stands as the crowned snow-capped landmark, while the Ngorongoro Crater drops away into a contained world of wildlife and light. And then there’s the Great Wildebeest Migration – that vast, moving pulse of hooves sweeping across plains and threading through rivers on its yearly circuit.

Serengeti National Park

Best For: Migration-chasers, big-cat enthusiasts, and anyone wanting the full, classic East Africa safari experience on a grand scale.

Undulating honey-hued hills spill into the horizon. Starkly striped zebras swish their tails in time with the wind, while the horned heads of a wildebeest herd track you as you trail past. This is Serengeti National Park – untrammelled and unapologetically alive. 

The magic lies in its shifting geography. The southern short-grass plains are where the Great Wildebeest Migration calves between January and March, drawing predators in close. The central Seronera region delivers year-round game viewing, with rivers and kopjes sheltering lion and leopard. Head north from July to October, and the Mara River crossings bring high-stakes drama.

The Serengeti is nearly 15,000 square kilometres of ecosystem, meaning space still exists – if you choose your timing and location well. However you shape it, the result is similar: dust on your boots, cameras working overtime, and plains that breathe long after the engine stops.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Best For: First-timers and photographers wanting dense wildlife, big cats, and strong Big 5 odds, especially black rhino.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area doesn’t feel like a “national park” so much as a living amphitheatre. The Crater floor holds a soda lake and green pockets that draw life inward: rhinos moving past pale pelicans, flamingos streaking the water in pink, lions patrolling with confidence. It can feel otherworldly, like someone turned the wildlife dial up and left it there.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Crater is the world’s largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera. The rim rises to roughly 2,200–2,400 metres, while the floor sits around 1,800 metres, which is why vegetation shifts quickly from forested rim to open grassland below. 

It’s also a multiple land-use area. Here, Maasai pastoralists and wildlife share space, with cultural visits arranged via rim lodges or nearby Karatu, which works well as a nearby base. If the Serengeti is Tanzania at full stride, Ngorongoro is the country condensed and utterly enriching.

Tarangire National Park

Best For: Elephant lovers, dry-season drama enthusiasts, and exclusive “we’re the only ones here” feeling.

Tarangire National Park is elephant country in the truest sense, with baobabs punctuating the skyline and herds moving through in serious numbers. It comes into its own in the dry season, when the land pares back to the essentials, carpeted with tawny grass and powdered with red dust. 

Everything that needs water starts orbiting the Tarangire River. It’s the park’s pulse, pulling elephant herds in close and drawing predators into the same frame. Beyond the classics, Tarangire also slips in surprises: lions that sometimes take to trees and sightings of rare dry-country specialists like the fringe-eared oryx.

It’s close to Arusha and pairs easily with Ngorongoro and the Serengeti – yet often feels calmer, earthier, and wonderfully unhurried.

Kenya

Kenya feels like a first sentence written in bold – dry and golden in places, cool and moss-soft in others. It’s often the easiest answer to “Where do I start?” in East Africa safari destinations: strong infrastructure, sharp guiding, unmatched vistas, and reliable wildlife sightings.

But Kenya isn’t only about the Big 5. It carries warmth in the welcome and depth in the culture that touches the heart and stirs the soul. The Maasai Mara runs on predator tension and Migration momentum, while Amboseli stages its elephant symphony to a boast-worthy backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

And beyond the headline parks, the conservancies soften the volume – fewer vehicles, more space, and nights where the stories live on well after the trip’s end. 

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Best For: Migration timing, big-cat sightings, and travellers wanting classic safari drama with strong guiding and infrastructure.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most storied stretch of savannah – the one people name first, and for good reason. Part of the greater Mara–Serengeti ecosystem, wildlife here feels concentrated: lion, cheetah, and leopard sightings are consistently strong, and predator action is rarely far off.

The reserve’s name comes from the Maasai people, who have long lived alongside this land. “Mara” is linked to “spotted” – a plain peppered with acacia trees and illuminated by dappled sunlight, with dotted big cats creeping across the grassy expanse. From July to October, the Great Wildebeest Migration surges north, funnelling toward the Mara River in urgent, high-stakes crossings. Outside that window, resident game keeps things compelling year-round.

Amboseli National Park

Life moves unblemished beneath the watchful gaze of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the world’s largest free-standing peak. The wide-reaching plains of Amboseli National Park are juxtaposed with the snow-capped crown of the summit above. At its stem, wildlife teems. 

This is elephant country, home to some of Kenya’s most studied and celebrated herds, including impressive big tuskers. Apart from the frequent sightings of these gentle giants, there are other marvellous creatures to observe. Giraffe move between acacia groves, cheetah scan the flats, and birdlife gathers at shimmering wetlands. The Maasai, long-time custodians of the land, remain part of the fabric here, adding cultural depth to the experience.

Rwanda

Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda rises and rolls in every direction.

Volcanoes National Park

Best For: Gorilla trekkers, primate lovers, and travellers wanting an immersive, forest-led experience in East Africa.

Volcanoes National Park rises in folds of deep green – afromontane forest and bamboo thicket rooted in volcanic soil on the slopes of dormant peaks. At roughly 16,000 hectares, and established in 1925, it’s Africa’s oldest national park. Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park feels like a different Rwanda entirely. The hills flatten into golden grassland, with acacias scattered across the skyline and lakes catching the light in long silver strokes. It sits along the Tanzanian border, where open plains meet papyrus swamps.

This is Rwanda’s only true savannah reserve. And today, it stands fully restored. Lion and rhino have been reintroduced, rebalancing the ecosystem and bringing back the Big 5. Kigali, With a Twist of Lime

Jill’s trip began in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital and unofficial gold medallist in urban efficiency. The city bustled with movement – motorbikes, bicycle taxis, and pedestrians all flowing together in a kind of organised chaos. But behind the speed and noise was something subtler: a surprising softness.

“It’s such a clean city – one of the cleanest places I’ve ever seen – and you can’t help but feel such a profound sense of community.” 

Between visits to the Niyo Arts Centre, Kimironko Market, the Nyamirambo Women’s Centre, and Nyandungu Eco-Park, Jill and her partner, Robert, eased into the rhythm of Rwandan daily life. (And by “eased in”, we mean power-toured their way through Kigali before ending on a high with a cocktail-making class that may or may not have been taken a little too seriously.)

Then came the mountains. And with them, the gorillas.

Welcome to the Jungle (We Have Nettles)

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge was their base near Volcanoes National Park, perched at an altitude and accessed via a mere 190 steps to the main lodge, then another 160 to their room. Fortunately, what waited at the top was worth it.

Cue the 5 a.m. wake-up calls and three consecutive days of trekking into the misty unknown – through fields, bamboo forests, and thick jungle terrain where “path” is a generous term. Jill’s crew were kitted out with gaiters, walking sticks, porters, and nerves of steel.

“Up at 5 a.m., our first gorilla trek was 17,000 steps through jungle – slippery, muddy sections thick with foot-grabbing vines and stinging nettles.” 

Each day delivered something different: the first glimpse of a two-week-old baby nestled in its mother’s arms; golden monkeys vaulting through bamboo thickets; a clearing full of juvenile gorillas using each other as jungle gyms under the relaxed, watchful gaze of two enormous silverbacks – occasionally playful, always aware.

“It was moody, misty and wet – the gorilla family members we visited were hunkered down in thick vegetation. We got peeks at adorable babies, including a two-week-old and a six-month-old.” 

Post-trek, the lodge turned into a full-blown recovery centre: muddy boots were whisked away, laundry returned for turndown, and massages served as a kind of spa-apology for the day’s nettle-induced trauma.

Hot water bottles were slipped between the sheets, along with the growing awareness that this wasn’t just a holiday – it was starting to feel like something more.

Evenings brought a new kind of energy: staff singing and dancing for guests around the fire during Igitaramo, a local sundowner ritual.

“Our mouths were hanging open at their energy and head balancing skills (the wine bottle was full)!”

Lakeside and Low-Key Legendary

From there, Jill and Robert swapped misty mountains for lakeshores as they headed east to Akagera National Park. Magashi Camp was their first lodge on a lake – a quieter landscape of woodlands, swamp and savannah. 

It was here they saw the Big 5 in under two days, but the real showstopper was a surprise birthday set-up away from camp, complete with sunset views and a dose of stillness they didn’t know they needed.

And the country itself?

“There are genocide memorials throughout the country. Now, the people of Rwanda have forgiven and reconciled and no longer differentiate between the tribes – they are all Rwandans.”

“It’s a beautiful country and everyone we encountered was a gentle soul with huge smiles. Great ambassadors for their country, always asking us to spread the word and tell all our friends and family to visit their lovely land of 1,000 Hills.”

Next Stop? The Mara

And so, with muddy boots, full hearts, and laundry that smelled better than ever before, Jill and Robert waved goodbye to Rwanda and boarded a bush flight bound for the next chapter: Kenya.

Is It Safe to Travel to See the Gorillas?

Despite the ongoing tensions in Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), it is still safe to visit the gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda. The gorilla trekking regions of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda remain unaffected by the direct conflict.

However, it would be irresponsible to overlook the fact that the situation is volatile and could change at any time. Travel advisories from various governments currently warn against travel to these areas, not because of immediate threats within Rwanda and Uganda but due to the proximity of the conflict in DRC. While travel is not banned, these advisories have significant implications for financial protection, as we’ll explain below.

Should You Book Now? The Financial Considerations

At Rhino Africa, we do not believe in boycotting destinations. Tourism is the lifeblood of conservation and local economies, and the consequences of a travel boycott would be devastating to wildlife protection efforts and the communities that depend on visitors. However, we do believe in a cautious and transparent approach.

The Key Issue Guests Must Consider is Financial Risk

1. Travel Warnings & Insurance Limitations

Due to the current travel warnings, travel insurance will not cover you if you need to cancel your trip due to an escalation of the conflict. This means that if you book now and the situation worsens, you may not be able to recover your costs should you elect to cancel. 

2. Non-Refundable Deposits & Gorilla Permits

At Rhino Africa, our average lead time from booking a gorilla trek to actual travel is up to six months. To confirm a booking, standard payment terms require a 30% deposit, plus full payment for flights and gorilla permits upfront. These payments are passed directly to accommodations, logistics providers, and conservation authorities, making them effectively non-refundable.

3. Final Payments & Shorter Risk Assessment Windows

The final balance is due 60 days before travel, meaning guests have a shorter window to evaluate risk before committing to the full payment. Unfortunately, unless our suppliers in the region change their payment and cancellation policies, guests must accept that their investment is at risk should the conflict escalate and they elect not to travel.

The Bigger Picture: The Risk of Mass Cancellations

If the conflict situation deteriorates further, mass cancellations could place significant financial strain on the small, high-end lodges and operators that define this region. 

As we saw during COVID-19, even when payment terms are flexible, refunds are not guaranteed because suppliers themselves may lack the liquidity to return funds in the face of widespread cancellations.

More concerning is that two Rwandan operators have already gone insolvent as bookings have declined due to the conflict over the past quarter. If more suppliers face financial distress, guest refunds could become impossible, regardless of cancellation policies.

Rhino Africa’s Approach: Caution with Transparency

We pride ourselves on being more than just a travel company – we are a movement, a champion for conservation, and a company deeply invested in our guests’ experiences and well-being.

We love Rwanda. It is one of the most extraordinary travel destinations on Earth, and seeing the mountain gorillas in the wild is a life-changing experience. We want as many guests as possible to experience its magic. However, our responsibility is to ensure that our guests understand the risks before making a decision.

At this time, we do not feel comfortable recommending new bookings for gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda unless suppliers adjust their terms to protect guests financially, given the traditionally long lead times. Until that happens, our approach remains cautious and transparent, not because we don’t believe in the destination but because we believe in putting our guests first.

Beyond Gorillas: Rwanda Is More Than the “Gorilla Express”

While gorilla trekking is the primary reason many guests visit Rwanda, it’s worth noting that the country offers far more. There are other incredible regions to explore that are well away from the conflict-affected areas, including:

1. Kigali – Rwanda’s capital is one of the cleanest, safest, and most dynamic cities in Africa. Its rich history, world-class museums, and vibrant food scene make it a must-visit.

An Unforgettable East African Safari Destination

Tanzania is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Serengeti National Park located here is host to part of the Great Wildebeest Migration. From late June to October, driven on by their thirst-quenching quest, roughly 1.5 million blue wildebeest run the gauntlet, crossing the mighty Mara River littered with giant crocodiles lying in ambush, into Kenya with zebra and other grazers following suit.

The Ngorongoro Crater provides a self-contained backdrop against which unique wildlife encounters unfold. Bear witness to the scale of animals sharing the world’s only unbroken caldera, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, laying claim to UNESCO World Heritage Site status. 1. Long-Sleeved Shirts and Jerseys

Long-sleeved shirts and jerseys are a must to protect your arms from scrapes as you weave your way through lush rainforests. Go for breathable fabrics with a colour palette that leans towards light greens, browns and khaki. Avoid bright colours as well as camouflage and animal prints.

2. Long, Waterproof Pants 

Much like your arms, your legs will thank you for the extra protection, especially if it’s waterproof. The rainforests of Rwanda and the Republic of Congo have high-humidity climates, and wearing waterproof fabrics will help you stay dry and comfortable during the trek.

3. Good, Sturdy Hiking Boots 

As the song says, “These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do”. A pair of good quality, waterproof hiking boots will go a long way towards keeping your feet happy as you trek. Remember to splurge on a pair with good ankle support. Also, get some gaiters – sleeves to protect your boots from dust, debris, moisture and insects going into interesting places.

4. Rain Jackets

You’ll be in a rainforest, so it’s important to be prepared for precipitation. A rain jacket will go a long way towards keeping your layers dry so that you’re never soaked and shivering. If the jacket is lightweight, it will be even better as you can stash it in your backpack until needed without adding much weight to your back.

5. Sun Protection

The sun can be very unforgiving in Africa, even when you think it’s hiding behind the clouds. Therefore, you should protect yourself as soon as you step outside.

Don’t forget to pack a wide-brimmed hat to keep you cool and shield your face, neck and ears from the sun. Sunglasses are not just a fashion accessory but prevent you from squinting and protect your eyes from the sun’s glare. And finally, to make sure you don’t spoil your time in Africa with painful sunburn, slather on some sunscreen and reapply frequently.

You’ll spend quite a bit of time out in the rainforest as you search for the gorillas, so invest in a comfortable backpack that you can carry with ease and keep your belongings like reusable water bottles, snacks, sunscreen and any other items you wish to bring along with you. 7. Camera

To ensure you capture the big moment you meet the gorillas, bring along your camera. However, to avoid disturbing the gorillas and other wildlife, flash photography is not allowed during gorilla trekking.

8. Thick Gardening Gloves

Yes, you did read that correctly: gardening gloves! While our gorilla cousins have evolved appendages that allow them to grip surrounding slopes and branches, humans have not. So, to best protect your hands when you use them to go up and down steep forested slopes, a nice pair of thick gardening gloves will go a long way!

While your eau de parfum probably smells wonderful, we suggest swapping it out for some eau de bug spray. Spraying insect repellent before and during your gorilla trekking excursion will help keep those creepy crawlies and their friends who fly far away from you for a comfortable trek.

Decoding Gorilla Trekking with Allison

I’ve done a fair bit of coverage on gorilla trekking – “literarily,” not “literally” – and, when doing research, I frequently come across variations of the sentiment, “Nothing compares to the experience of meeting a gorilla in the wild.” Initially, I accepted this view, imagining the awe such an encounter must inspire and then creating my own interpretations in my writing.

That is why when I had the opportunity to interview my colleague, Allison, about her recent trip to Volcanoes National Park and her gorilla trekking escapade, I was eager to pick her brain to REALLY find out what feelings flooded within her when she encountered these gentle giants of East Africa.

Allison’s Rwandan Revelations

When sitting down with Allison, one of Rhino Africa’s seasoned Travel Experts, my objective was to get to the crux of my curiosity about this “gorilla soul-stirring phenomenon”. 

However, very soon into our conversation, I discovered that while, yes, gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is the main event when visiting Rwanda, there is so much more to this country than meets the eye.

Allison’s Kigali Kickoff

Like many travellers to Rwanda, Allison began her journey in Kigali, the nation’s capital. Situated at Rwanda’s geographical centre, Kigali serves as the ideal starting point for exploring the country’s numerous natural attractions, including Volcanoes National Park.

Luggage collected and leaving the airport, Allison was immediately immersed in the vibrant energy of this cosmopolitan city, where bustling streets and meandering avenues mingle and meet Rwanda’s many rolling hills.

One Must Remember How Far Rwanda Has Come

Admiring the cityscape, Allison’s first impression was how pristine it was, saying, “It’s such a clean city – one of the cleanest places I’ve ever seen – and you can’t help but feel such a profound sense of community.” She also notes that this spotless appearance is even more significant when considering Rwanda’s sombre past.

“You must remember that the Rwanda genocide happened in 1994 – which really isn’t that long ago. So, to see a city that’s so immaculate and functional is extraordinary and truly inspiring,” Allison commented.

The Rwandan genocide, a tragic chapter in the nation’s history, saw the massacre of around 1 million people over approximately 100 days. Today, this episode is confined to history books, and Rwanda, especially Kigali, has transformed into one of Africa’s most striking and secure cities.

Vibrancy and Valor

Exploring Kigali, Allison discovered charming hotels, vibrant malls, charming boutiques, coffee shops, markets, a variety of restaurants, a thriving art scene, and numerous galleries and museums. One notable stop was the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where visitors confront the nation’s tragic past and appreciate its bright future.

Allison advises that – albeit an important landmark and one she would definitely recommend – the Genocide Memorial may not be for everyone as it documents many harrowing details of the genocide, which is not only heartbreaking but can be an intense experience for some.

“The museum part is quite graphic and can stir deep emotions. Yet, it’s important to understand what transpired. Observing Rwanda’s current state compared to its past can be incredibly uplifting, showcasing the nation’s journey towards hope and positivity.”

At this point in my conversation with Allison, I was eager to delve further into Kigali’s captivating history and culture. But I re-focussed on my mission – Volcanoes National Park and the gorillas found within!

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

There are a number of lodges located on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park. For the gorilla-trekking chapter of Allison’s journey, she chose to stay at Singita Volcanoes National Park, a lodge boasting breathtaking views of the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes.

Her experience there was as enlightening as it was exciting, starting with a comprehensive orientation…

Day Before Preparation

“In the dedicated Conservation Room at Singita, I was greeted with an interactive educational experience,” Allison shared. “Managed by specialist conservationists, this space offered a unique perspective on the endangered mountain gorillas and their habitat.”

The preparation was meticulous. Before dinner, they took Allison’s measurements for the necessary trekking gear and provided her with a schedule for the following morning. “They even took our shoe sizes! It’s amazing how every detail is considered,” she added.

The Morning Before the Big Moment

The next day began early with coffee, tea and light breakfast treats. After selecting her lunch preferences, Allison was equipped with a backpack and trekking gear. “The journey from Singita to the park headquarters was a brief 15-minute drive, filled with anticipation,” she recalled.

At the headquarters, another round of coffee and tea awaited, along with the introduction to her guide. “We were at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters from about seven till eight, and then the trek began.” 

Allison noted. Accompanied by a porter and armed with a walking stick, the hike was an exhilarating four hours from start to finish. “We hiked for about an hour and a half to meet the gorilla family. The porters kindly took our bags – we could only take cameras or phones to avoid tempting the gorillas with snacks in our backpacks.”

Meeting the Mountain Gorillas

“Allison, tell me about that moment,” I urged. “What was it like to be in the presence of the gorillas?” She paused, collecting her thoughts, and then her eyes lit up as she delved into the heart of her journey. “It’s hard to put into words,” she began.

“When we finally saw the gorillas, it was like stepping into another world. The awe I felt was overwhelming, like seeing a lion or leopard for the first time, but more profound. There was no fear, only a sense of wonder and connection.”

One Hour, Once in a Lifetime

Her excitement was infectious as she described the intimate hour spent with the gorillas. 

“You’re there, mere metres away from them, with nothing in between. The experience was like a dream, watching them in their natural habitat, hearing their sounds, and observing their interactions.”

The moment of encounter was otherworldly. “When you’re approaching the gorillas, the porters stay behind. You get an hour to spend with them, guided by the gorilla family’s tracker. It’s a surreal moment. You’re not even 10 metres away from a gorilla! The ones you’ve seen on TV are now right in front of you, with no barriers.”

Her description of the encounter was filled with emotion. “It’s a child-like wonder, a feeling of connection. Watching their mannerisms, you can’t help but feel they’re so like us. The way the mother gorilla protected and nursed her baby, the playful juveniles, and the dynamics of their family – it was mesmerising and incredibly relatable.”

She reflected on the profound impact of the experience.

“You sit there, immersed in their world, capturing every sound and movement. It makes you appreciate why conservationists like Dian Fossey were so deeply committed to these creatures.”

This connection, Allison noted, was something beyond mere observation.

“It’s hard to articulate, but there’s an undeniable bond. Seeing their protective nature, their familial interactions, it’s like looking at a mirror reflecting our own behaviours and emotions.”

Trekking Back

As the trek concluded and she made her way back, Allison’s thoughts lingered on the gorillas. “The experience leaves you yearning for more. It’s a testament to the incredible work done in conservation and a reminder of our shared bond with these majestic beings.”

Allison’s Reflections on Rwanda: Beyond the Gorillas

As our conversation continued, I found myself increasingly intrigued by Allison’s broader experiences in Rwanda. Eager to understand the full scope of her journey, I asked, “Was there anything that exceeded your expectations?”

Her response was heartfelt. “At the end of the day, it was the people of Rwanda who truly amazed me,” she began.

“Their positivity, hopefulness, and dedication to their country were incredibly inspiring. Despite its small size, Rwanda is a powerhouse in its operations and a shining example to other African nations. It’s rightly called ‘the Switzerland of Africa’.”

Allison’s admiration for the Rwandan people was evident as she continued. “I was blown away by their friendliness and helpfulness. They are also remarkably self-sustainable, taking great care of their countryside, producing their own food, and cultivating tea leaves and crops.”

She touched on the national efforts in wildlife conservation, particularly gorillas, as a testament to the country’s commitment to its natural heritage. “The way they look after their wildlife is admirable. Gorillas are a prime example of this dedication,” she added.

Equality in Action

But it wasn’t just the environmental stewardship that caught Allison’s attention. “The President of Rwanda’s stance on women in leadership and work positions is profoundly impactful. During my conversations with locals, they shared how this emphasis on women’s empowerment has positively transformed their society.”

Allison emphasised the egalitarian ethos of Rwanda. “There’s a palpable sense of equality. Women and men are seen as equals, both in society and in the political sphere, with many women holding influential positions.”

One Last Curiosity

As our discussion neared its end, I was curious about any advice she might have for future travellers. “For those planning to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda, I’d recommend doing some research on the genocide,” Allison advised. 

“Understanding this part of their history offers a more in-depth perspective and fosters immense respect for the people and the country.”

She concluded with a note on the overall experience. “Being informed makes the journey more meaningful, fulfilling, and humbling. It’s not just about the gorillas; it’s about understanding and appreciating the nation and its remarkable journey as a whole.”
